CNN has found a new role for Phil Mattingly.
The veteran journalist will become the channel’s chief domestic correspondent and an anchor, delivering enterprise reporting and filling in as a host on programs across the daypart.
Mattingly, whose first assignment will be covering Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, will also appear in 2024 convention programming, and other political events.
Mattingly most recently was co-anchor of CNN This Morning, having joined the program just a few months earlier from the White House beat. New CNN CEO Mark Thompson shut down the show, moving production of the hours to Atlanta and telling staff they could apply for new jobs.

“Phil Mattingly is one of the strongest political journalists and anchors we have at CNN,” said Thompson, in a statement. “As a 2016 campaign correspondent, Capitol Hill correspondent, Senior White House Correspondent and Chief White House Correspondent, Phil has risen to every challenge CNN has thrown at him. He’s the perfect choice to become CNN Anchor, Chief Domestic Correspondent and to play a central role in our coverage of one of the most momentous election cycles in American history.”
Elsewhere Wednesday morning, CNN announced a deal with Politico to bring back its signature “Grills” to the RNC and DNC later this year in Milwaukee and Chicago. As at previous conventions, the grill (now called the CNN-POLITICO Grill) will provide food and drinks, and host events and discussions, while serving as a hub for the news outlet.
“The CNN Grills attract the most consequential decision makers, policymakers and leaders from across government, journalism and politics to one central location at both parties national conventions,” said David Leavy, CNN’s COO. “POLITICO is a first class operation that is known for its comprehensive reporting of all things politics, and the combined reach and expertise of CNN and POLITICO will make the coverage, conversations and context we host at the Grills richer and capture why this election matters so intensely to the people of the United States.”
